Outdoor recreation is an increasingly large part of Pennsylvania’s economy. Local communities across the commonwealth capitalize on nearby outdoor recreation assets to attract customers to downtown businesses while creating a desirable environment for residents and visitors alike – an economic development strategy known as Nature-Based Placemaking. Pennsylvania Downtown Center retained JS&A to quantify the economic and fiscal impacts of outdoor recreation and nature-based assets and provide strategies to help more communities leverage Nature-Based Placemaking as their local economic development drivers.

JS&A quantified the outdoor recreation industry throughout the state of Pennsylvania to determine the total establishments, employment base, and revenue in both direct, core outdoor recreation industries and industries supported by outdoor recreation tourism.
JS&A provided the Pennsylvania Downtown Center with a series of recommendations to support outdoor recreation industry businesses, nonprofit place management organizations, and local governments to better leverage local economic and fiscal impacts of outdoor recreation and nature-based assets.
